Half an hour later, Ray was staring up at the Drive Inn, and he could only hope Katie was right. He certainly didn’t feel like the right man for this job.

What was he hoping for here? It wasn’t as though he’d be able to come up with a police sketch, or even a vague description. Even if the clerk had been working on the eighth, odds were not great that he’d remember the person who used Melissa’s credit card a month later.

Ray looked over the little motel. The dark gray clapboard was depressing. Definitely not the kind of place you’d take someone for romance, unless you actually wanted to emphasize how illicit your activities were.

And then one little detail caught Ray’s eye. Above the office kiosk counter, high on the wall, was a white security camera.

If he’d had one of those, this investigation would have been over before it began, and Melissa’s killer would be facing life in prison.

But since he didn’t, he was going to have to settle for trying to get pictures off this one.

Kim had done it, somehow. Maybe Ray could do it, too.

He drew a bracing breath and walked up to the check-in window. “Hello there,” he said, trying to sound affable.

“What kind of room do you want?” replied the bored clerk.

“Actually, I’m hoping you can help me with something else.”

The clerk pursed his lips. “If it’s not a motel room, probably not.”

“It’s not a room, but you might know the answer.” Ray pointed up at the security camera pointed back at him right now. “How long do you keep that security footage for?”

The clerk glanced up at the camera, as if he could see it through the wall. “I’m not sure. Goes to a remote server. Six weeks? Six months? Something like that.”

Ray allowed a tiny bubble of hope. Either of those time frames would be long enough. “Interesting. Do you hear much news from Dusky Cove?”

The clerk furrowed his brow. “What happens in Dusky Cove?”

Before a couple years ago, that was a very good question. Not much happened there but good, clean fun for tourists. But now they had more than their fair share of murders.

Ray wasn’t quite ready to play his ace yet. “We’ve had a string of petty thefts,” he said. Starting with a seed of the truth should help.

The clerk narrowed his eyes and nodded slightly as if that all sounded vaguely familiar.

“Well,” Ray began again, his mind dancing as fast as it could, “my guests have had their cars broken into at the Mayweather House.”

He mentally crossed his fingers that the clerk didn’t know Lori.

“The bed and breakfast?” the clerk asked.

Ray also crossed his toes. “Yes, and we were hoping you might have footage of the guy.”

“Why would we have footage of him?”

“Oh, well.” Another lie, he needed another lie. “We realized that somebody called the rooms at the B&B to see if people were in for the night, and we looked up the number and it came back to the Drive Inn.
